The town of Wiluna is 966 kilometres northeast of
Perth and is situated on the edge of
the desert at the gateway to the
Canning Stock Route and
Gunbarrel Highway. It is the service centre of the local area for the local Martu people, the pastoral industry, the Wiluna Gold
Mine, and many more people who work on other mines in the area on a "fly-in/fly-out" basis.
Within the township you'll find the Shire of Wiluna Office open 8am - 4pm Monday to Friday and the Canning-Gunbarrel Discovery Centre with
tourist information and
heritage displays. The Tjukurba Gallery is definitely worth a visit open Monday to Friday 8.30-4pm.
Services and facilities in town are the Wiluna Traders,
Post Office, Police station and Aboriginal Health service.
There is no accommodation or tours in town for tourists, however head out of town 11km on Wongawol Rd to Gunbarrel Laager.
The
population of the town of Wiluna has in recent years stabilised at about 300 including a large
population of indigenous Australians. According to the last Census, there are now approximately 1644 people living in the Shire including several mining villages, which are run mainly on a “fly-in fly-out” basis.
