Hi all, would like to get an in dash stereo head unit with gps capability that will accept the hema maps. I am not sure if the hema is an sd card or a download, Clarion and Alpine have the double din units but unfortunatley they are slightly ahead of my budget. There are cheaper units on ebay -direct imports- of just as good quality.
Thoughts and experience with any of these would be great...
Not interested in the stand alone gps unit

The chinese ones on Fleabay work fine. I know a number of people including myself who have them. You can run the CE version of Ozi on them via a mini SD card. Some of the older ones only took a max of 2gig card so they do not take all of your map files so better to get the ones with a bigger capacity.
I have heard that the single din units with the motorised flip out screen tend not to fair
well with the dust and harsh vibration of offroad so better to get a double din unit if it fits your vehicle.

Hi Hotfihez,
I got a double din unit for my cruiser off ebay about two years ago. It's got a 7" HD screen . Running OziExplorer CE on it with Hema Maps, Raster Maps and VicMaps - all with no problems. The unit has a dedicated GPS SD slot and a second SD slot for other media eg music. The GPS slot came with its own street navigation software pre-programmed on it. Just added OziExplorer via the computer and a SD card reader.
The screen resolution is great. Has been my primary GPS navigation system for quite a number of off road trips now and has served me
well. The angle of the screen on the dash has been a nuisance in direct sunlight, but I just made a small "sun screen" over the display and that fixed the problem. Also came with an external GPS aerial.
The AM/FM radio quality is compromised a little (reception) but the sound is good with 25W per channel x4 channels. Also had a CD/DVD player, iPod connection, DTV as part of the unit.
For the price I paid at the time and the features it had as part of the unit, its been great value for money.
Regards
Rob K

There is a supplier who sells on EBay called A-Sure that has done a lot of these as
well and offers good Australian backup service.

We have an indash unit from VMS. The only thing that I do not like is the inability to tilt it DOWN when the sun is shining on it. Our sons tilts up as do all that I have seen so far. We have a
home made shield for it but that is useless when the sun is low as in the morning and afternoon and shines in through either the drivers or passengers windows.
See if you can get one that tilts down.

We also have a VMS in a Patrol. Bought it last year before
Easter. Had an iGo8 problem a while ago, but was able to reset around that. Also unable to retract the car's radio antenna when the unit is powered, ie. when the car is running. Asked if there was a fix, was advised to get an auto electrician to install a manual switch to the antenna. Hopefully this will not become an issue in areas where the scrub encroaches on the track. Re off-road mapping, we bought the version with the Hema maps, which we run under MemMap format (it also run Ozi if you buy a license). Been very impressed with the accuracy and performance of the off-road nav so far.

Hi Russler
Apparently it is out of warranty. Isn't there some ACCC thing that there is a minimum warranty of two years?
If so I would be jumping up and down so far and hard that they would hear me at
my home in
Canberra. What an absolutely non professional fix. Sounds like it was made by their janitor.
That said, we use Ozi and Igo8 for street nav. Don't use the street nav much as we have the UBD maps for most small country towns in Ozi. Very pleased with it apart from the sun thing.

I've just bought the Polaris "Next Generation" in-dash unit, made specifically to fit the radio opening in the 100 series Toyota (as
well as some other models).
Haven't installed it yet; they sent me the wrong camera, so need to get that back first.
It has Hema maps loaded on an SD card; has ipod connectivity, external hard-drive connection/USB port (and an external hard drive was supplied as part of a 4WD Action magazine promotion), bluetooth, switchability between car's camera and the one on the camper trailer, AM/FM radio, external GPS antenna etc.
It was only a fraction of the cost of the VMS unit I priced and although it is somewhat dearer than the ebay Chinese deals, I am more comfortable knowing that this is an Aussie made/backed item.

Both my cars run the flea bay 7inch GPS, DVD, R camera, DTV, radio, CD.
Run Ozzie CE with all the hema maps & Igo8/ Route 66 both do the job
well at around $300 delivered. In my 150 Prado I left the factory radio/blue tooth in.
