Hope some one can help i have a 2001 DX GU Patrol Diesel ute and was considering getting a Turbo fitted as it is a bit of a slug for the work that i do so i have a few questions?

1/ How much will it change the fuel economy as i know more power more fuel.

2/ Is the radiator the same size for the non turbo motor as the turbo motor.

3/ I allready have a 2 and a 1/2 inch mandrel bent exhaust so i should be able to
adapt the turbo pipe to suit ?

4/ Is it worthwhile fitting an intercooler or the boost compensator that was talked about in the latest 4WD Monthly Magazine.

5/ Finally the cost i have been quoted just under four grand to fot and supply through my local Opposite Lock store is this reasonable.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Martin,
In reply to Q1...
You will use more fuel, but if its done right by the installers, eventually as you get to know how to drive it, you can reduce that consumption and enjoy hills as well. Plan ahead when driving, if you seea hill, get ready for it before you drop too much speed, things like that.

Here are some stats on the same trip i did 12 times in the past 2 years....
Bankstown (NSW) to Frankston (VIC)...same road, same distance (from my home to my parents home). Both had 140 ltr tanks.

In my non turbo GQ I would arrive at parents home and have 15 ltrs left in tank.
In Turbo GQ I would have to add another $25.00 @ Broadmeadow before heading onto the south eastern freeway (no fuel stops there)

Last trip i did was with new injectors (hi flow set up for turbo). That trip was even worse, used an extra 15 ltrs heading down. Did me 2000kms while down there and heading back home it ran excellent. Sitting on 110 - occasional 120Kph She pured home all the way..5th gear without any downshifts while on the Hume Hwy. Never could do that with non turbo GQ, in some instances the non turbo would be back into 3rd gear.

Q2,
Not sure about radiator size on GU, but dont hope for miracles, get yourself a BIG radiator esp if your palnning to tow. WE all know the 4.2 diesel is a great motor as far as reliability goes, but not the best engine when it comes to heat. I run a 5 core in mine, works fine for me.

Q3,
2.5 mandrel should be fine, just hope it lines up with who ever's kit you end up fitting.

Q4..sorry cant help you with this one.
Q5.. Shop around, there are "turbo's" and there are "TURBO'S" out there, Some work well on the 4.2 diesel others ..well they just look pretty. Dont believe everything they tell you. In My Opinion Martin, I would be buying it from a Turbo specialist, someone who makes a living by selling turbo's. This is one area you DONT need a middle man.

Hope i helped you here, didnt realise id babble on so much sorry. But its not an easy thing to answer in 10 words.

5 core, now that’s a big radiator.

I would go the intercooler if you are planning on running more than standard Boost or may up the boost at a later time.

The most important thing it to make sure it is all set up right.

Angelo,
I put the five core in when I had my 4.2 turbo and ended up going back to the three core, with the spotties on and the air con rad there was to much resistance to air flow so things got worse. I went back to a new three core and good quality coolant with a wetting agent had no problems after that, plus I ran a summer thermostat all the time 72 degrees I think.

1) yes you will use more Power needs fuel

2) depends on who you talk to.

3) yes

4) yes to intercooler - no to wasting your $ on any 4wd magazine.

5) try this and fit it yourself - Honestly, it is a REAL easy job. If you could change the Exhaust manifold Gasket (12 nuts) you could fit the turbo. All you need then is the fuel pump setup properly, and the exhaust matched up.
