Only know the new Defender is out in '07 and will still be filling quota's for the army.Don't know what it will look like but after 20 years reckon the body is due for a change.
cheers Mark

In a word WHY??????
If my memory is correct that body shape came out with the Series 2 in 1957/58 and even then it was only a series (excuse pun) of modifications from the Series 1 of 1949.
Why change something that works
well??
How many other vehicles can boast such a long production run without major style changes?
VW Beetle is probably the only other to qualify..

Yeah, it would be a shame if the 'look' changed. Only a few 4wds have 'the look'; Defender, Troopie and the Oka. Everything else has the plastic look, especially the newer model things with black mudguards, bumperbars etc.

Yes we've got a club member who has built the vehicle you describe, Landy/Defender body, Toyota turbo diesel six, transmission and axles.
coils all round with long trailing arms, range rover chassis from memory with body adjusted to suit.

Hi Axle.
Not sure about the defender but Ford are making some big changes across the board in 07.
I found the following on the AULRO site and took the
liberty off pasting it here.
Land Rover dealer have been told to expect a new lightweight V8 turbodiesel late in 2006. As predicted in May 2005, an expanded version of Ford/PSA's outstanding 2.7-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel is being prepared for use in the
Ranger Rover. It is almost certain to also find its way into the Jaguar XJ diesel line-up, possibly with twin turbochargers. Delegates attending the annual Land Rover dealer conference in November were told the 2007 range will see the normally-aspirated 305bhp 4.4-litre petrol V8 dropped from the Range Rover family and petrol sales concentrated on the 400bhp 4.2-litre supercharged V8. But the big news will be the disappearance of the current 174bhp BMW-inspired straight-six TD6 engine and its replacement with the first all-new TDV8 to be seen in a Land Rover product. Dealers have been told the 2007 Range Rover model year will feature the supercharged petrol engine alongside the TDV6 and TDV8 turbodiesels. Although no specifications have been released it is expected the compact new short-block TDV8 will displace between 3.6 and four litres and develop around 260bhp. The new engine and range revisions will appear shortly after the world debut of the new five-door Freelander late in 2006.
Regards
David

Thanks David.
Theres certainly an array of motors for them to play with , mind boggles now as what they might do with the defender. Sounds like the new freelander will be a totally revamped vechicle as
well, mind you so it should be, the last models were a shocker. Thanks for info mate.
Cheers Axle

We are due to change over our td5 defender and have been told by rover aust. that the future of the defender in aust. is uncertain, as they want to concentrate on the luxury market . Last year they only sold 150 defenders and would not say if they were to continue in aust. I am sitting back to see what happens.

With their almost non-existent dealer network outside capital cities and renowned lack of product support, what else do those cretins at LRA expect? With decent back-up and competitive pricing, the defender would still have a good following in rural and outback areas. But who in their right mind is going to buy a workhorse vehcile where the nearest dealer is perhaps 1000 km away?
Surely some of the hundreds of country Ford dealers could be persuaded to take on LR dealerships if these were some reasonable incentives and support from LRA? But then, that would take intelligence and leadership - so Buckley's chance of that happening...

Hi all,
Maybe after LRA ("that mob of mindless jerks who'll be first up against the wall when the revolution comes!!" - with apologies to Douglas Adams) finally lose the plot and drop the Defender we'll have to look at starting to import Santanas from Spain??
The Series IV - classic Series Land Rover styling, parabolic leaf springs, 2.8 turbo-intercooled Iveco engine, 5-speed box, etc. etc...
Anyone want to loan me a $million or so of "venture capital"?
Ian
