The fan on the GQ is split really badly and i was looking at getting a new non genuine one off ebay. Its $85 delivered compared to aprrox $300 for the genuine. Any horror stories??? I know the fan clutch assembly should not be replaced with aftermarket but hoping the blades are ok to do so??

Interested in the responses here too Brew. Mine hasn't started to crack (yet), but it's something that I'm gunna have to consider. However, I'm also very tempted to look further into replacing with a couple of big mutha leccy fans too.

eleccy fans will fall apart with mud and dirt in them regularly, not worth the effort, considering theres nothing wrong with your truck, why would you consider it?

Will you two please stop begging for fixit handouts regarding those clapped out piles of junk you continue to drive.

Ooops! In Roachies case tomorrow is supposed to be a hot one, so I guess his contraption is on ice so to speak. Wouldn't dare take it on a Hummock trip.

Anyway where was I after that slight digression, Oh yeah!.

Just buy a JEEP and be done with it.

Cracking fan blade! what next - peeling paint, lifting trim, disintergrating windscreen wiper hose, dash warping, carpet moths etc etc.

C H I T Roachie, it must be a terrifying trip every time you go out with the adrenaline pumping, senses razor sharp waiting, waiting for such things as the fan blade/s to crack, Oil thingamy to leak, Temp gauges to indicate a melt down, isolators isolating when they shouldn't etc etc

Got me beat how you have time to watch the road to keep on it.

OK! If I keep this up I am going to have an accident.

All the lights on the dash lighting up, the fusible link taking a hike just cause the winch's been used ...........

Brew the blades should be fine I reckon, and Roachie I have a set of leccy fans off my old Falc, not worth the money

Brew, just get a Toyota fan blade and then start upgrading from there. Toyota fan belts, toyota water pump, toyota engine, toyota body, toyota drive chain, toyota internals and if you want to go all the way, fit a toyota grill then your problems will be over.

VL commodore clutchfans are apparently the same (search you may find the thread), so maybe VL one from a wrecker?

couldnt tell ya... Andrew (AWILL4X4) has one at his work, and measured it up, not sure if the bolt holes for the fan were same, but the rest is, so I would suggest yes, skyline would be since its the same motor as VL

Yep, RB30 viscous couplings are the same measurements as the TD42 one, both for the water pump and the fan blade assembly. The TB42 petrol ones however have a different hole diameter for the fan, the water pump side is same as RB30 and TD42. I made an adaptor to go from the RB30 viscous coupling to the TB42 fan on my petrol GQ.
Regards Andrew.

Yea but skyline ones are no better. I recently drove my old syline that I sold to my parents and it was running like crap. After checking the plug connections I noticed it had 2 blades from the fan busted off. I cost my parents about 200 bucks fitted to fix. (I would have done it but i was already on the plane)

Davoe, we're talking about the viscous hub assembly not the fan itself. In fact the RB30 fan won't fit the TD 42 because the fan is pushed forward on the the hub of the RB30 and backwards on the TD/TB 42's.
Regards Andrew.

Thanks for the info Andrew. I am pretty sure my viscous hub is working correctly on my TB42.(Is there any way of checking?) Its just the fan i was going to change. $85 seem a fair price for non genuine? Or is it a case of needing to the whole lot? Thanks Stuart

Stuart, $85 to your door is a good price, just make sure you get the correct fan for your viscous hub. The TD42 and TB42 hole centres are different between them. On mine, I made up an adaptor out of 4mm aluminium to bolt RB30/TD42 viscous hub to TB42 fan. I have a couple of cracks in my fan also so when I buy a new fan I'll just get one to suit a TD42 and do away with the adaptor.
Regards Andrew.

Yes it is true...
I replaced my Td42 fan assy with a VL standard Commodore and it fitted except for longer screws were needed because the boss was thicker on the VL..

I swapped my cracked fan assembly including the viscious hub with a new non genuine one for the wreckers.
It has been there for over 2 years and not a problem with it. no cracks, and the viscious hub works fine still.
