Just been down to Repco to spend the ?HUSH? Money they gave me when I couldn?t buy one of the $99 DVD?s. My wife, God bless her, has been worried about the effort I have to put into the hand winch and has MADE me buy an electric winch. I might add that I have only used the hand winch twice in 3 years, 7 only one of those times was in anger. Anyway I picked up a 9,500 lb winch for $499 less the $100 hush money, so it was the same price as a cheap hand winch.
The question. What size battery should I put in to run it ??
Have a 760 CCA cranking battery that it would be running from. Is this Big enough ? Bearing in mind that this thing may be used every blue moon, but I will want it to work when it?s needed.

Should be fine.
Just run the engine slightly above idle when winching to keep some charge up to the battery

My winch is 9500 lb also and the manual it came with recommends a battery of at least 650 CCA, so 760 is probably enough.

Thanks Sudsy & andrew.
Flappa, I do have a dual battery system, BUT, the second battery is a deep cycle for the fridge & I thought it may not be a good idea to use it for the winch so would run it via the cranking battery, I realise that the motor would have to be kept running as the cranking battery will flaten quickly. Any info will be greatfuly received

Couple of thoughts.
Most of the guys I know that run dual batts and a winch use 2 large crank batteries , and also run their fridge off the Aux Battery.
Problem with running your winch off your main batt is IF you cant have the vehicle running , you are likely only to get a few minutes out of the winch , and your DC may or may not start your vehicle.
Running it off the Aux Cranking Battery , then you have no problems with what your main battery is doing , and if you CAN keep the motor running . . . bonus.
Just fuel for thought

Yes looks good & 3 year warranty.
I know you get what you pay for, but the price of the gear comming out of Chian, I don't think you can go past. If it only has half the life of an expensive one I'm still ahead.
I have tried buying Australian made all my life, but I have grown old grummpy and turned into a cynic.

Vince, your cranking battery will handle it easily and at 9500lbs the winch will also handle the Frontera easily. As said previously if your vehicle has a hand throttle keep the engine about 2000 revs so the alternator will help with power.
Looks like you got youself a bargain.
Er happy pulling.

Repco winch for $499? Here in WA they're advertised at $699. Wonder why there is such a big price difference.

After the above posta re the price, I checked the Repco Dogalog and rang the local store. "Yes sir the price for the 9500 lb winch is $699." "Don't uou have one for $499" "Yes sir but that is only a 6000 lb"
Vince races out side to
check. It's a 9500 lb so the bargain I thought I got was now MUCH bette.
There may be such a thing as Kama !
