WA Travel advice

G’Day fellow explorers,

I need some advice from Western Australia locals. We are travelling full time in a caravan and through bad luck more than bad planning, will be in the south west region over the peak silly season of December through to February.

We know we will have no chance of any stays along the south west coast during this period, and was wondering if anyone could suggest inland locations where it would be suitable to base ourselves and hunker down until at least the end of January.

Not locals, just travelers......
Rather than "hunker down", we would look for a community that we could get involved with and volunteer our time.
Earlier this year, we spent a few days in Cue. Great town and welcoming community that is working hard to protect the history and architecture of the town.
I am sure that there are others.

Another alternative....
Volunteer at a National Park. We have done so on several occasions (not with visitor contact) and the experiences have been very worthwhile.

The other thing we have learned is that most National Parks, every community, every cattle station have secret places that they do not share with visitors, especially tourists. But if you can spend time (weeks or months) as a contributing part of their community, their trust can be gained and they will share those special secret places with you.

If you keep away from the coast and the main through roads you should be able to find places where you can drive to some of the tourist spots. There was one spot that I liked at Kulin Caravan Park. We had a good stay and were able to drive to places like Lake Grace and Wave Rock.

There will be other places like that where you could shift to every week or three. You could also try places inland from Geraldton. If you start looking now, I'm sure you could find half a dozen or more places you could book in succession and hop from one to the next.

Kulin caravan park is a nice little shire run park, where you 'pay what you think it is worth'. A shire rep comes around each arvo about 5pm to collect the dues. No argument, just a 'thank you'. Most seem to offer $25-$30 a night, which I reckon is fair, but there is always the occasional nob who abuses the goodwill of the shire. You can agree a longer term rate at the shire/info office just up the road. There is also a free camp area behind that office, which sees a bit of use.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Peter.
Looks like a great little park and area around Kulin where we can base ourselves and explore.

It sounds like a gd little community park and we are always happy t contribute to the areas we pass through.

A bit of “down time” will also g well as I have my head in the books self studying for the standard amateur radio theory exam.
