Many long time members & followers will be familiar with “Project TONI”.

Yesterday TONI went to a new owner. That car was/is a legend, however my needs changed & I decided to sell TONI to a new adventurer, who will write new stories of his own in what is an amazing vehicle.
I will miss TONI, but will have fond memories of the old girl. I hope Daryl will have as much enjoyment from that car as we did.

G/Day mate, I remember that build well,,it was a great achievement back then from all involved. I remember ringing Jason down there and asking him about it, evidently he had a lot of phone calls in regard to it. Good to see someone have a go at a project like that with great success.

Cheers Axle.

TONI seems to be before my time on Exploroz.

Searched for Threads and/or blogs but no details can be found.

Is there a link somewhere?

Bill, the project was the removal of a ZD30 engine from a Patrol and replacing that engine with a 1HD-FTE quad-valve Toyota engine.

The project started in 2008.

Bill I left this site a few years back during a tumultuous period. Enough said on that subject.

I posted all sorts of information here but strangely nothin much remains of it. There were progress updates blogs etc. searching all of that seems to be gone????!

I called it “Project TONI” TOyota NIssan. That was in about 2008-2010

Colin, threads on the ExplorOz forum are archived after a period of time - but they remain accessible via a Google search, using the initial word "ExplorOz", and then, any key word you're seeking.

Cheers, Ron.

Thanks Ron
I enjoyed reading those posts with hindsight

It was a big project that I only got through with the fantastic support of members here for Om ALL camps.

I cannot thank all of them enough.
Cheers Colin.
PS Toni has a new family that were thrilled to buy him. Happy motoring.

Colin, any archived ExplorOz thread can be found merely by using the word "ExplorOz", and the thread number, in a Google search.

It's very helpful that you noted the previous thread numbers in all your posts.

That was some project, glad to see you got it to work and got many years of pleasureable motoring out of the final result.

I think my biggest "conversion" was fitting 4 wheel discs to my '77 F100 4WD around 1980.
I fitted XB Falcon rear discs to the Effie to improve overall braking, and the handbrake holding ability. That was a cinch compared to your project!

Cheers, Ron.

Thank you Michael. Hope you guys are well & enjoying retirement. We sure are. We are doing a bit more global travel now we don’t have to worry about “leave restrictions”.
Also we’ve downsized to the Ranger & the Forrester, Still able to leave the blacktop though.

He has gone to a good home and will be used for his intended purpose .Towing and 4x4 work .We needed a good tow rig and had already used a new grand cherokee up .I was wanting to go away from so many electronics as we are planning a few big trips and being a diesel mechanic of 45 years experience I just couldnt convince myself to buy another new vehicle .Weve had a ranger and numerous other toyotas and only one nissan .So looking forward to getting toni back upto scratch and put to use .Hes already been on two runs towing our 2.5 ton horse float .Plenty of power but not upto the jeeps .Still very usable though.

Happy travels Daryl. If you have 25% of the fun we had you will have a great time. As mentioned in a email Jason Dymock can answer some of your questions for you. Enjoy TONI.

Hi Daryl - When you say, "already used a new grand cherokee up", what does that mean??

The reference to "going away from so many electronics" is ominous. Does that reference your poor experience with the Jeep?

There are virtually no vehicles built in the last 20 years that don't have serious amounts of electronics in them.
It certainly is advantageous to have minimal electronics, but that means having an extremely basic and not particularly efficient vehicle, too.

Electronics are the reason why todays vehicles perform so well (when they are running properly) - but many electronic components in numerous vehicles, are poorly sited, poorly protected, and have harnesses with insufficient protection from road debris, water, and dust.

In the case of many Jeeps, poor wiring assembly, or general assembly faults is often the reason for their poor record with electronic problems.

The other electronic sources of problems are excessive complexity and faulty programming.
Problems in these areas can be extremely hard to track down.

A nephew owns and runs around 40 Cat machines. He bought a new Cat motor grader several years ago, costing $750,000.
These earthmoving machines are also becoming complex with no less than 9 ECU's on the Cat grader.

The grader ran fine for a couple of weeks, then it wouldn't go over 9kmh! It's supposed to do 40kmh.
After numerous visits by Cat servicemen, they couldn't find the problem!
So, the Cat dealer flew in a high-level Cat technician from the USA!

The American technician spent some hours on the repair before he found a software programming fault that meant some of the ECU's were not communicating with each other!
He re-programmed the software and the fault went. That was a pretty expensive warranty repair for Cat!

The grader is still performing well, several years and many thousands of hours later.

Cheers, Ron.
