G'day, have a VX 200 series cruiser on 18 inch grand craps which are only about 25% worn. Question: I am heading up to Innaminka then across to
Hungerford then back ,leaving from
Ballarat, will the tyres cut the mustard or should I upgrade?
Cheers,
Wak.

Towing ?
Depends on how you drive when off the tar. Driven sensibly, the Grand craps should be OK.

Put a set of Light Truck all terraine tyres on. Whilst the dirt roads are OK I would have peace of mind knowing I had good strong tyres on.

Grandtrek AT22s are ATs and LT rating, they are a good strong tyre, just about the most roadblike AT tread you will find, that's all.

Les I think you will find they are a Passenger construction.I think they would be fine for the OP's requirement though.

They are AT hence AT22..
They have LT stamped on side wall.
I have them on
Ranger about 70k, all sorts of terrain, excellent sand tyre at pressures down to 6, one sidewalk stake up in Mallee country.
Not sure, like many brands you might be able to get specs in bit pax and lt, but sure the LC OEM like the
Ranger will be AT LT.

The Grandtreks on the 200 series are a much better tyre than anyone gives them credit for. One mate complained that he couldn't wear his out - he did 80,000k on the set and only had one
puncture during that time while he was in the
Kimberley. Another mate runs 2 sets but there days he prefers the Grandtreks to his AT's because the fuel consumption (and more importantly range) is a lot better.
Some of the roads up
Innamincka way can be pretty stony and I've seen those american tyres chipped out after a run to
Nappa Merrie and back. At least the Grandtreks never chip.
But you have to look after them. Like all tyres, 80% of the punctures will happen in the last 20% of the tyres life. And you must reduce pressures, keep the speed down and don't overload if you want a trouble free trip.

OTOH, I never had much luck with the OEM Grand
Treks on my Prado.
I found they were prone to punctures on stoney dirt roads - four times in three trips, two write-offs. Includes Outback and remote area roads and Vic/NSW forest roads. They didn't seem to like loose stones.
The American replacements, BFG AT KO1s admittedly did chip, but I always came back with the same six tyres (4 on the tug, two on the van) that I left with.
The newer KO2s don't seem to chip.
Not looking for an argument, just reporting my experience.
Cheers

Gday Frank, not talking Prados here :-) Haha
200 series takes a bigger tyre with 116 Load Index

Hi Phil,
I missed your specific reference to GrandTreks on the 200 Series. Sorry :-(
The Prado went a couple of years ago and the Grand
Treks 5 years before that. I don't recall the specifics of the OEM GrandTreks, ie load Index, etc, but I agree there could have been a difference between what's fitted to a Prado vs what's fitted to a 200 that accounted for my less than happy experience with them.
Someone may be able to clarify that.
Cheers

Gday Frank,
The original poster has a 200 series, so just trying to keep it relevant for him.
Prado runs AT20 Grandtreks which have a different tread pattern and 112 load index. 200series uses AT22 with 116 load index.
But tyre talk never stays on track - we all have our stories and I am as guilty as anyone :-)

Hi Wak
I had them on a Prado from new. They did 40,000 kms without any problem. Most of it on gravel including Murchison, Gascoyne, GRR, part or Tanami, Wolf Crk, Arnhem Land and Wa Goldfields. All of the above towing a 2t offroad van. They are tougher than they look.
They were about 60% worn when I replaced them. Only reason to replace them was another big trip coming up and my desire so have a full tread depth for the trip. Other wise at least 20-30,000kms left in them.
No chipping, no punctures, no damage whatsoever.
Save your money and run them out. As in all matters relating to tyres how you treat them has a major impact on how they "treat you".
Enjoy your trip
Cheers
John

Some good advice re tyres here. I was swinging towards replacing them as we don't like GT's much. But some happy owners with sound advice it seems. We hope that you will call in and see us at Kilcowera on your way past. You could put up a review for the Exploroz community for the trip gathering next year which will be held here! Super excited about that! Toni

The AT 22 is pretty much the standard 'factory' fitment on new Toyota's for the last few years , bit of a compromise tire , quiet on the tar and brilliant on
the beach [aired down ] but fairly useless in mud even with 100% tread , longevity purely depends on where the vehicle is driven and at what tire pressures , if on tar its nothing to get 70odd thousand km out of them [ 5 wheel rotate ] whereas on the dirt and gibber its luck of the draw on any given day / strake..... mind you at full retail price they are bloody expensive , but most Tojo dealers out west have them in brand new condition for way less than 'retail' from tire change overs prior to new vehicle delivery from buyers who want a more 'aggressive' tire to begin with.

The 200 Original equipment AT22's are either 285 60 18 or 285 65 17 ( for 17 inch.). They are both passenger construction with 2 ply sidewalls.

After reading about mileages like I just want to go to a dark room and cry for an hour.
I ask myself these questions every time I read posts like this, What do I do wrong, is my driving that bad, do they save all the bad wearing tyres just for me.
I bought the vehicle on the 23-06-2013 fitted with
Dunlop whatever they were, only driven between
Rockhampton and Gracemere, with the exception of one trip to Mackay and return.
Below is life span of my tyre wear,
Wed, Feb - 04 - 2015
4 x 697 Dueler Bridgestone tyres and a wheel Alignment **Speedo 22100** Rocky.
Thu, May - 26 - 2016
Changed front tyres with my two brand new spares (Original Tyres) at Mt Augustus. **45687** 5mm tread left on Bridgestones.
Sat, Sep - 10 - 2016
2 new Toyo Cross Country AT 2 **Speedo 55910**
Alice Springs
Fri, Apr - 07 - 2017
2 new Toyo Cross Country AT 2 + Wheel Alignment **Speedo 61797**
Charleville
I am now on my third set of tyres and others still get another 20,000 more than I do from one set.
Please I am desperate and will take any advise anyone willing to share how I can get 80,000 out of any type of tyre on the market.
I have learned how to make them last a long time, but can not master how to make them go a long way.
Cheers

Upsize the standard 265/70R16 to 285/75R16 and you'll do better

Do you want to take 3 spares and probably need all of them, or swap now and sell your grandtreks for $100 each? The grandtrek is a passenger rated tyre, its sidewalls are 2 ply, which is bad if you need to air down, bulging and presenting the sidewall to the rocks and sticks out that way. i asked a similar question before doing the Binns track, and decided to get coopers, im glad i did, because the coopers copped a hiding, theres chipping and pieces missing out of the sidewalls, but no punctures. Admittedly, i did the tanami and simpson, then Innamincka/coongie/
hungerford coming back....

GRANDTREK AT22
Highway
Fitted as original equipment on Toyota LandCruiser for superior 4WD performance. The Grandtrek AT22 features reinforced casing to reduce the risk of sidewall damage in tough off-road conditions. It is suitable for drivers who like to mix up their driving surfaces, on and off-road
The above is from the
Dunlop site.
