I recently purchased a 600w pure sine wave inverter. It came with a red wire, a black wire and a yellow/green wire. Now I'm smart enough to know that the red wire goes to the positive terminal of my battery and the black to the negative terminal, but can someone please enlighten me as to what the heck I do with the earth wire (yellow/green)? Under what circumstances would this earth wire be used?
Thanks
WBS

.
The red and black wires are, as you say, for the pos & neg 12v to power the inverter, which is isolated from "earth". Earth being the frame of the inverter.
The green/yellow wire is connected to the frame of the inverter.
There is no need to connect the green/yellow wire for safety purposes however sometimes it can reduce possible radio interference if it is connected to the vehicle body or chassis. It's your choice. I connected my inverter frame to the body as a precaution.

A lot of
inverters will come with the factility AND instructions to earth the inverter or bond the mains earth of the inverter.
THe australian standard explictly forbids the earting or bonding of
inverters genertors or other floating 240V supplies, except where that inverter or generator is part of a permenent fixed installation with a complete MEN earth system and a driven earth stake installed by a licenced electrician.
We do not earth portable
inverters or generators in Australia.
