Best roads for towing 21' caravans ..least big pulls up hills.....from Victor Harbour to
Nuriootpa. Tow vehicles are diesel Jeep. Any suggestions most appreciated. Google suggests - to
Strathalbyn,
Birdwood, Mt Pleasant,
Eden Valley. Would this be best. Thanks.

Hi Jill
If I were in your shoes, I would take the main road out of Victor and head towards
Adelaide and hit, and stay on South Road.
The lower section will have you on the Southern Expressway, which ends at
Darlington.
From there just stick to South Road and follow it through to the Northern Expressway, and then just follow the signs through to Nuri.
Have a look at your Google Maps.
Cheers
Stephen

Google Maps
gives this route as the shortest route. It also gives
Stephen's route as an alternate that is 4 km longer but takes the same time (running solo that is.)

Hi Peter
The reason why I selected this route for Jill is after leaving the hills outside of Victor, it is basically a downhill run all the way to
Adelaide and then flat sailing from the Northern Expressway.
For not towing vehicles, there are a number of good routes, but these can be quite hilly.
Cheers
Stephen

Peter, I clicked on both, and they are the same route - same as Stephen and I suggested. Maybe Google changes the suggested route at different times of the day?

I don't know what Google is up to. I made a couple of attempts to link the correct route and each time it came up with the route through
Adelaide. This time I inserted a waypoint on the route.
Shortest route
It worked OK this time in the preview.

Got it now Peter.
Through Meadows,
Hahndorf,
Birdwood and
Angaston.
Its not where I'd tow a big caravan which was the point in the original question. Too hilly, windy and single lane.
Very scenic though, and takes in the beautiful
Adelaide Hills and the best sav blanc wineries in the country.

As a frequent visitor to
Adelaide (used to live there) and in particular Aldinga and Para Hills I'd say "Avoid Main South Rd from
Darlington to Grand
Junction Rd like the plague until they have finished it all". There's Portrush Rd to the East and Tapleys
Hill Rd to the West. Main South Rd may be the most direct route but I wouldn't say it's the best/fastest compared to the 2 alternatives. In fact I'd say that it's probably the best route for testing driverless cars as if they can't handle that one unattended then they have no place on public roads. The frequent changes to speed zones, lane alterations and detours do not make for a relaxing drive. The debacle that is Main South Rd goes right back to 1968 and the MATS Plan. On the Southern end you had the mess that was the one way Southern Expressway that even had GPS units directing people on to it when it was actually going the wrong way.

Same as what Stephen says - South road all the way to Northern Expressway then across to Nuri.
The Torrens 2 Torrens project is happening north of the Torrens river at the moment so there are huge roadworks. But we live in the area and find that South Road is OK during the day, but can be restricted at night and weekends. Once north of Regency Rd you are in 90 kph or greater all the way to Nuri.

Yes, your only real hills are those out of Victor, you can just get that out of the way, then you are dealing with minor gradients and just the traffic.
Do it outside of peak hours and the traffic will be ok . . . best done on a Saturday or Sunday morning early I reckon.
If it has to be a week day, then after 1000 and say leave before 1300 to ensure you clear town before school pickups and early pm traffic.

.
I would suggest though, that when you are in the Barossa Valley that you pronounce it as Nuri-OOT-pa,
not Nuri-OOP-ta or you may get some frowns and suggestions. lol

Hi Allan
Thanks for that great offer, but unfortunately we will be elsewhere in the bush at that time.
The
Hay River is a fantastic drive and one that we will do again one day, seeing it is 12 years since we first did it.
Have a great drive and it will be interesting to hear what it is like there now seeing Lindsay is no longer with us.
Cheers
Stephen

Many thanks for all your suggestions. We did the
Strathalbyn.......
Angaston route. The driver didn't want to worry about traffic....roadworks and so we meandered along. Quite a lovely drive, not too hilly and little traffic.

you took the best way by far ..... 90 % of
victor Harbor people would have done the same .... local knowledge !!
There many alternatives " fine tuning " but missing the suburbs is the way to go .
note : 99.9 % of dash navigators would have taken you via suburbs long & boring way ....
If i was towing i would take 2.13 route
victor nurioopta

Absolutely Nick it is a nice traffic free way to go, but more hills of course . . . the original request was for least hills, hence peoples suggestions . . .
Great Jill, that route would have been reasonable and the Jeep diesel would not have any issues with that, but obviously suggestions given are tailored to peoples primary requests.
Hope the break (if that's what you're up to) goes nicely.

Ah yes, we had a brilliant couple of weeks away.
Good you got your French Line crossing done without issues, but always good crowds travelling across to and from the Finke weekend, so to
Birdsville Races and Big Red Bash etc.
We did a fairly reasonable section of it from a bit east of Erabena to Poeppel.
Can honestly say it's the last time I'll drive it if at all possible, the condition seems to be the worst ever than previous times in the past few years we've done this.
I'd rather do remote NT (or WAA if necessary to cross in SA) than go on that rollercoaster again . . . QAA is always fun though.
