Hi. We're currently in
Darwin and want to head to
Normanton but we'd like to go via the
Savannah Way. We're not sure of the road conditions on the unsealed sections. Can anyone who has traveled this way lately please advise on the road conditions between
Borroloola and Domadgee and also between
Leichhardt Falls area and
Normanton? We believe there's also Leila Crossing which may be difficult to get across. We're towing an Avan Aspire 525 on road van which has been lifted a couple of inches but we don't want to damage it. If you think we should go back through
Cloncurry and up through Burke and Wills please say so (although I'm getting mighty sick of that road ??)
Thanks in advance for your help
Sandra

We have just completed it from East to West. No problems, may be a bit slow in
places but otherwise all good. A great drive.

The highway to
Roper Bar is roughly half & half. From there to the
Barkly Highway all dirt then black top to Boroloola & some distance towards Domagee, From there mainly dirt. Domagee to
Burketown would be roughly half & half. Black top almost to Leichardt Falls then dirt to within roughly 80km of
Normanton.

Hi Sandrab58,
I have read the batsy reply above. I think he means the Carpentaria Hwy, not Barkley Hwy.
Better still, turn left at Billengarrah. (Tee
junction) and go straight to
Borroloola avoiding
Cape Crawford, it's quicker and shorter.
The Sav. Way is a great drive with lots to see. I will be doing it for the third time in 10 days or so. Just be careful thru' the creeks and dips.

You are correct peterdre it should have been the Carpentaria Hwy..but while your way is shorter I feel it will be slower for Sandrab58 as a section not far from the T
intersection is "very slow'. This was the way we came. It's very doable but 'slow'.

Last time I did it which was about 6 years ago it was ALL dirt from
Borroloola to Hell's
Gate. Watch the dips are some are mild but some are wild.

We travelled the
Savannah Way along there 10 days ago. It's not too bad this year. good luck with the Avan..let your tyres down on the vehicle and van, travel at your comfortable pace.
