We're travelling from
Perth to Townville in earl July with my family and will be going via the
Outback Way. I'm looking for
feedback on the road conditions of the Great Central Highway,
Plenty Highway and the Donohue Highway. I'd also be grateful for any indication of diesel fuel costs along the way.
Thanks
Mike.

Hi Mike. Have just done
Winton to
Laverton mid-May. Will turn comments to your travel direction. We have a modified 2014 Pajero and we were not towing but are heavily loaded.
Laverton to NT border was in excellent condition with some newly sealed sections and we had to resist the temptation to sit on 100 kph. Played it safe and sat on 85 - 90. Lots of roadworks though.
NT border to Docker River was a woeful 10 km section of extremely severe corrugations which had us down to walking speed for most of that section.
Docker River to
Tobermorey was variable but generally not bad except for some bad patches of bulldust between Hart's Range and Jervois.
Qld border to
Boulia was very good with about half of it newly sealed and two lane.
Did not record the diesel costs but be prepared to pay much more per litre.
Hope this is of some assistance.

Diesel is $1.50/L at
Boulia, and 131.9c/L in
Winton.

Thanks Jon. We did the Great Central in 2013 and found it in good condition back then too. We want to do the Plenty before it turns into a black top with Hyundai Getz' s overtaking us.

Nothing. I once owned one and thought it a good vehicle. I just wouldn't take it off road. LOL.

You need to
check just days before you go as conditions vary over time.
FWIW the Plenty is patchy at the moment, literally - stretches of fast crushed
rock and dirt followed by stretches of red dirt of variable quality.
The Qld side, the Donohue, is very good.
From
Boulia to the start of the bitumen on the Plenty (120 k from the Stuart) I averaged 80 this Sunday/Monday.
Tobermorey I'm told is expensive.
