Can anyone tell me the origin of the dressing of ant hills All along the Stewart Highway the ant hills have been dressed some with miners hats and jackets some in ladies dresses. What do the ants do if the temperature changes in thier hill?

Don't think it will worry them one bit. It is grader blades they fear.

With the advent of solar, many now have reverse cycle air-cons they can run during the day.

Who started it ? Unknown
Why? Because they obviously had spare clothes to toss away.
By the way, it's Stuart Hwy and they are Termite mounds so if it affects them badly, who cares. Having enough trouble with them up here.
They do help to amuse while driving the route, often.

Oh Phil you were doing ok until you said we are having enough trouble with them up here anyway.
They are cathedral Termites and grass eating only, they pose no risk to you house.

Other answers: who does it? backpackers

Yes I have a chuckle at some but do believe they are an environmental eyesore.

Cheers

Steve.

Steve, I deliberately didn't specify a species. I have had some little buggers get into the house, the big ones in trees and there are similar mounds as being discussed out in the parklands nearby. I don't discriminate, I take the attitude of "Nuke them all and let God sort them out". Pest control mob coming to treat in a couple of days for the latest lot. I hope they also find the snakes.
Be careful of your reply as I might be expressing some humour, just like those that dress the mounds up, which doesn't bother me one bit.
BTW, I do agree with you, they are an environmental eyesore those Termite mounds themselves. They can also be a safety hazard for drivers due to idiot tourists who see them for the first time and stop on the road to take selfies.

Yes Stuart it is.

Very unsightly. I hope those who are doing it get hit by a roadtrain, same as grafitti sprayers get bit by passing trains. Then they don't do it anymore.

Here's one we found up on the Balgo-Kiwirr Road some years back. Didn't dress it, just put a head on it! Dressing them, that idea Sphinx!

Wish they would stop it, the first couple were amusing but after your seen hundreds with old tatty clothes falling off them there just become another
form of graffiti.

They are a bit of fun and some people do have a good sense of humour. They break up the trip a bit and make it enjoyable.
