Travelling through the Flinders to Innamincka and Thargomindah

In about five or six days we plan to travel through the Flinders, past Arkaroola up to Mt Hopeless and onto the Strzelecki, on to Innamincka and then to Thargomindah. We will be in a LC and towing a 3.5 tonne off-road van. Right now there are patches of road which are described as restricted to no towing and with probably damp spots.

Anyone have direct knowledge of the roads in question? I will ring Innamincka Trading Pots for info before leaving internet coverage.

Yes they are largely well maintained dirt roads and will suit your travel arrangement well. The only Road currently showing restrictions is the Cordillo downs road. Can I suggest you also check on the SA DPTI website for most up to date road closure info.

Thanks Mick. We are very familiar with the roads, having been to Innamincka about five or six times. I should have been clearer that it is the current road conditions which I am concerned with.

The current road report shows the little stretch from the main road into Innamincka is not accessible to any vehicle over three tonnes, or towing a trailer.

I am watching the reports and ready to change to Plan B if necessary.

I wouldn't trust the Innamincka Trading Post for info myself...a few years back the lady working there was adamant we shouldn't tow a trailer (we have a Kimberley Kamper) through Cordillo Downs, when we did ignore her and did it, I reckon I could have driven my wife's sedan along 90% of the route....even passed a couple of onroad caravans being towed through there going the opposite direction. In short, the lady working there had no idea of it's current condition.

I have always found the staff at the tavern to be quite unhelpful, possibly they are tired of the endless tourists bothering them LOL. And yes, we know that is their reason for being there, and they should recognise that the tourist is important. So I am not surprised at being given wrong information.

I cannot imagine the locals out there to be stupid enough to offer any advice like "You'll be fine, go for it". So many fools and dunces will get themselves into trouble, no matter what the conditions. Negative advice from the locals is likely as a protection from law suits from said fools and dunces when thing go wrong.

Those bagging the locals might take a moment to consider the questions from the perspective of those being asked.

Yes Zippo, the Tavern and the Trading Post are two different bodies; I am aware of the difference.

And Iza, I can only comment on what I have found in the past. And I think I did speculate on why they might be terse at times. But I am of the opinion they should be reminded of the client's needs. The tourists are why they trade.

If the locals have no idea of the current conditions, then it's best they say nothing at all Iza, not look like a fool themself when conditions are nothing like they say they are. I never asked for a road report by the way, she just saw us towing trailers and said there's no way we should consider taking them along that route, after I had mentioned that's where we were going.

We are doing a similar route in reverse in June. If you could post an update it would be appreciated. Esp the mt hopeless section?

Yes, we will report back. The section between Arkaroola and Mt Hopeless goes through some clay sections and likely to be most affected by rain, so I will give feedback especially on that section.

The section from Mt Hopeless to Arkaroola was very good, with some minor churned up areas and only small patches of corrugations. It was all in very good shape.

We decided to go from the Strzelecki into Cameron's Corner and then up to Noccundra Waterhole. All sections of that stretch were fine, with only minor washouts on the crests of sand dunes. We passed another van and quite a few cars going through.

If I get the computer out with my photos I will put up some of the section down from Mt Hopeless.
