Lake Burbury is man made, with its waters held back by the Crotty
Dam on the
King River. Built by Tasmanian Hydro Electric Corporation, it supplies the
John Butters Hydro Electric power station.
It is a popular fishing water and is conveniently just 15 minutes east of
Queenstown. In its waters you can fish for the legendary Tasmanian wild trout with both brown and
rainbow varieties available.
It is named after
Stanley Burbury, the first Australian-born Governor of Tasmania.
There are boat launching, picnic and barbecue facilities plus a
free camping area for self contained visitors.
There are numerous
free camping options along the foreshore - see separate camping listing.
