See my recent post # 98820 for mounting suggestions.

I bought an Apple iPad as I am familiar with them as the hot chick who lives with me - a.k.a. wife - has an iPad. Looked at a mate's Samsung Galaxy style tablet but decided to stick with the familiar.

No probs except the quirky bits ya have to buy to get it compatible with other stuff.

e.g. yesterday had to buy a $ 40 ciggy lighter style power charger as just plugging the cable into the vehicles USB port won't charge iPad.

My iPad 1 has no problem charging from a USB cig plug type fitting and standard cord on my last trip, maybe later models are different??

I have Memory Maps loaded on my iPad and iPhone with complete 4WD maps. Works a treat. It is a bit tricky downloading and syncing the maps thru iTunes - in fact it's a pain in the a... and of course there's always someone who will say that's rubbish, Apple products are rubbish etc etc.

(after 20 years Manager of support services for over 40,000 users in an Australian education facility - I couldn't see the back of a PC, MS and Enterprise etc etc quick enough so made the switch to iEverything)

I love the maps and the iPad screen is great. I don't mind that I have to plot the course with way points. Whatever works for you is great.

At some stage I will download the relevant street directories as well for NSW. (But since I didn't rush in to the recent (down) upgrades I'm happy with Google maps for that stuff.

Recently in Canada - I thought I'd try out the Memory Maps app as I had nothing else to do on a 1500km drive and it was my turn to rest - and was astounded to find that it picked me up and gave me the maps of the regions in the US and Canada where we were - bonus.

Cheers

I agree, Memory Maps is a great app. And also it is a bit of a pain on Ipad / itunes.

However i also run it on Android ( and the PC) and it is a different story, because they don't have to sue Itunes it is much simpler. You cal also get a tablet for half the price too.

Oziexplorer is ok too on Android. It's not available for IOS devices.

Memory Map would be my pick though. You can get Hema maps, 25k :1 topo, and a great free 250K topo map of Australia.

I just tried Memory Maps on an iPad on our last trip and found it much better than my in dash windows CE unit
Memory Maps and the Hema App are the same software and whichever App you run with you still can buy the same maps via the MM map shop so I assume go with whichever one works out cheapest???

AlbyNSW, I am not sure about the pricing for the Hema version but the Memory map version of the Hema maps is about $130 for the Ipad/phone only version and about $190 for 2 x PC and 2 x mobile ( android and Iphone etc). The PC version is great for planning.

I am 99% sure that other maps cost the same either way.

Yes on face value they are same same with pricing, I wonder if one will end up being better value than the other over time.
Part of me favors the Hema version because they are map specialists but then Memory Map appears to be software specialists

Hmmmm!

Plus in the MM version you can get the PC licence or Android licence for little or no cost. For example the MM mobile version is a licence for Android or Apple, whereas the Hema version is only Apple AFIK.

Hi Rare,

I have a Samsung Tablet with mount.

Have Oziexplorer loaded. I can route plan, navigate - hasn't been tested in full anger yet.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 with WiFi and GPS built-in.

OziExplorer for Android can be downloaded and installed for free on a trial basis and if you like it (who wouldn't?) it only costs $25 to convert it to a licensed and full blown application with lifetime updates.

You will also need a set of digital maps and the best is the NatMap series by Geoscience Australia.

I trialed mine out recently on a trip from Adelaide to Bathurst and it worked faultlessly but for one minor hiccup. It wouldn't automatically change to an adjacent map. The next map could however be loaded manually.
When I got home with time enough to check the settings, I noticed the "Load More Detailed Map" box was not checked, which I have now enabled. I think this will fix the problem, however I haven't roamed far enough away since to enter an adjacent map area.

OziExplorer is the default application of choice for many Forumites and better still, it's Australian developed and owned.

Gidday

Following this with interest as I bought an ipad recently, though I am not sure its size doesn't rule it out for in car nav.

Does anybody out there have any views on the Mud Map app for ipad? Same price as Hema, uses Westprint maps among others.

cheers

Rocco

One thing to remember if you go the iPad route is that you need the WiFi + Cellular version to get the built-in GPS Chip.

I too am thinking the tablet option, and now with the release of the ipad mini i think im sold. It has a 7.9 inch screen and is purpose built as a touch screen. You can buy the 16GB wifi for $360 - has up to 10hours battery life - and if your running an iPhone you can use the hotspot feature as your mobile internet connection for when your out exploring. Load it up with the TomTom app, HEMA maps app, Mud Map 4x4 Maps (VMS) app & Camp Australia Wide app and you have the ultimate go anywhere SATNAV...

Well thats my thoughts anyways

Scottee,
As said above if you want to get the GPS verso you will need the 3G version of the IPAD.

If you don't then you will need to have a wifi connection which you will not get in many places in OZ.

Also the Memory maps/Hema Maps relies on there being a GPS connection, not a WIFI connection.

I have an IPAD2 and have it mounted in front of the dash via a Clic on attachment and it works great. I was worried it may obstruct my view as it sticks up a bit but it doesn't.
I use it for both the Hema maps and Co-pilot, very easy to switch between the two.

I have bought the Hema Maps plus some additional maps. If Oziexplorer was available for the IPAD I would have gone that way as it is the best of the bread in my opinion.

Hey Rich,
Thanks for the heads up!! Thought WiFi connect via hotspot would have been satisfactory but if these Apps rely on a GPS connection then its the Wifi+Cell version for sure!!!

And i'll keep an eye out for this Clic attatchemnt you speak of. I have heard of an attachment brand called Brodit but thats about it...

Scottee,
Brodit and "Clic on" seem the same thing from what I can tell.

I go my Clic on set up from via the Web form a place in Australia, I can't remember the name, it is a bit more expensive than some of the others but work well.

Do a google search on clic on and you will find it. If you have trouble let me know and I will hunt it down for you.

Some time ago I did put some info up in the forum about them and a few pics, but they got removed I think.

FYI if you did just buy a WIFI one I believe you can get a GPS attachment for the IPAD which plugs in to it. Not sure how good they are but I think they cost around $100.

Rich

Have a look at Maps n Trax You can use your own maps similar to Oziexplorer.
If you use the Camps app you will need Metroview for off line navigation.
You can get a Bluetooth external GPS for the iPad as well as a plug in.
If you are doing any serious touring you will not have internet/phone access for much of the way so a GPS is a must have.

Scottee,
No suction cups with clic on unit.

I bought the cheapest , the passive one.

I got sent he other one by mistake but returned it.

I did this because I was concerned that if driving on rough roads i might damage th ipad connection. The ipad4 and mini ipad have a stronger connection like the iphne 5 i believe.

But not sure clicon support them yet.

The passive unit still allows you to coonect a charger but you do it when you need to.

I will post a few pics of my set up if you want

Rich

Rich,

But how did you mount the passive holder?? I thought the passive holder was just that - a holder, and you need some kind of fixing apparatus to the dash/windscreen etc... yeah mate if you could post a picture or two that would be great!!

Scottee,
When you buy the Clicon there are two bits you have to buy plus one optional bit which I would recommend.

The two mandatory bits:

The first bit clicks on to your dash board and you have to buy one that suites your car. There are usually a couple of mounting places and you buy a different attachment for each (but you buy only one). The web site describes this but if you have problems let me know and I will send pics or find it for you.

The second bit is a frame which the IPAD is mounted into. This is screwed on to the first bit if you do not have the optional bit

The optional bit you can get:
This bit screws on to the first bit instead of the second bit. You can them mount the second bit on to it.
The benefit of this is that you can remove the IPAD frame (the second bit) and use other clicon devices (eg a phone attachment)

I hope I have not bitten you two much here :).

I will get some pics for you, being pestered by the wife at the moment.
I do have some but cant find them so will take some more.

Richard

PS - on a slightly different note I downloaded the Wikicamps app last night. It is a very very good app. in this stage of it's development for showing campgrounds/stops/places of interest etc.....

We have the Camps 6 book and now my thinking is when we have data connections we will use this app when we travel and when we don't we'll go back to the book version. (it will only work to it's full extent if you have a data connection - it's not a GPS)

It only costs $2.99 and I thought that was great value for what you get. (Even a satellite finder) I'm looking forward to posting some updates to it - but it 'seems' fairly comprehensive already throughout Australia.

and no - I don't work for them.....

Cheers
