Hi happy campers,

We are spending 2.5 months heading West to East across the top come July, very exciting! We are travelling with our beautiful little boy who will turn one just before we head off. We are trying to get everything sorted but one thing we seem to be having real issues with is the best and most importantly easiest way to keep our camper trailer cool (apart from parking it under trees of course) !

The little taka will sometimes need to sleep in the CT (trackabout) during the day and hence the need to keep it as cool as possible. We have purchased a big heavy duty tarp but finding it a real mission to put up, especially when trying to keep an eye on the lil one, in fact one of us ends up left with the camper trailer set up/pack down whilst one of us plays entertainer to the ankle biter. We wont have the luxury of staying in the one place for too long so need something that's quick to put up and pull down.

Should we look at a tropical roof that's permanently attached to the roof of the tent instead?

Really appreciate your ides/thoughts/experiences!!

B and D (ohhh and Little F) :)

we spent 18 odd months living in the tropics north of broome with at the time an 18m old baby, we only had 12h of power each 24hrs and less on weekends, we foung the best set up was a 12v system, that you will of course have, and we had 12v computer fans set above our heads that blew air down over our faces and down our bodys, it worked excellent for us and bubs .....One thing you will find is that bubs will sleep when traveeling if you have AC, if you dont i would not bother leaving home, we would feed bubs just before leaving someware and he would sleep "like a baby" hahha
We would also take the car fishing in the heat of the day, of course when bubs wanted to sleep and park up right where we were fishing and leave the car running on high idle with AC running, sometimes for hours, a mazda bravo at the time, and bubs would sleep like a log ....... car would sweetly tick away and use bugger alll fuel, you can run the risk of giving bubs heat rash if you dont let it get some "cool" sleeps, when we had really hot humid weather and never went anyware for a while bubs did get it a few times .....
I know i have not answered your "tarp" question but i dont think you have any options other than a shady spot ........ ditch the heavy tarp :-)
(buy a dvd player and use AC)
Cheers n good luck

We had a tarp which is a pain to put up. In the end we got a piece of shade cloth and would just lay it on top of the trailer. It would drop the temp heaps. In the middle of the day you could not go into the trailer, put the tarp over and it was ok. Also try a misting bottle of water, give the kid a spray to cool him down. The fan idea of Joe's is a good idea if you have the power.

Good tips guys. Any idea where to buy battery operated fans that would achieve the same? We plan to do as much of our travelling between campsites when it's his sleep time so he can be in the air conditioned car.

Band D,

Jaycar sell them but just make sure you place grills on both sides of the fans so bubs can't stick fingers in.

Have a look at their web site and type in 12v fan.

Just check the noise level of the fan before buying. Some of the cheaper ones sound like a chaff cutter.

Thanks guys, will do as suggested. Just threw a smaller tarp over the tent section of the CT and seemed a bit easier to handle. Was thinking by just having it lie over the actual tent (tied on of course) it will help with the temp.

the computer fans we used to get had plastic grids on them and kids could not get fingers in them and they also were very quite ..... as your computer is now .....
Most camper trailers have a battery set up in them for lights, you can install 12v plugs and run the computer fans off them and have the battery charging whilst you drive ......
The shade cloth idea is good, really good as most tarps start to flap in even a slight breeze but shadecloth wont ....
I just had a look at Dick Smith and quickly found this, there are probally far better out there so well worth thinking about, even a portable battery packs to power it ....
$14-98
