Hi All

The other night when I was looking through old desert trip photos, there were images that I take for a good reason - I have a fascination with Old Survey Cairns and Trig Points.

When possible during our travels and there is a Cairn or Trig Point, I will stop and get some images of it. My interest grew from a very old TV programme on how it took a team of surveyors to determine the centre of Australia, a point that if our continent was balanced on a pin, it would not tilt in any direction. This point took over 2 years to accurately determine and today is known as the Lambert Centre.

I have visited the Lambert Centre only 4 times well before I had a digital camera, so that will now give me an excuse to get there again and get more images - this time digital.

If you would like to share any images of old survey Cairns, Bench Marks or Trig Points, you can add your images to this forum post, which I will link to my latest Blog, Stone Cairns and Trig Points

Go through your images and if you can add some more images, that would be great.

Have a Great Day.

Hi Stephen,

I tend to seek out the Cairns and trig points as well (or maybe they seek me) and as you know they are found all over the place.

Here's a few images:

Hi Alan

Great minds think alike....

I see we have a lot in common. That old Survey Cairn west of Shiddi Pool looks very impressive.

Do you have a picture of the Cairn at Mount Allott??

That is one place that I have to visit, as my Great Grandfather was part of the Hubbe Expedition and beat your friend Mr David Carnegie there by a few months.

Thanks for the great images.

Cheers

Hi Stephen - I do have a couple of pictures.

Lucky your Great Grandfather's party went through when they did, as my friend used some of their left over equipment later in his journey.

Also a lot of Permanent Survey marks in the middle of nowhere. This one on the Old Coach Road 1/2 way to Maytown.

The view is from the hill it was on from here you start heading down the hills to maytown.

Ho Tony

Thanks for those great images. I find a great way to have a look as to where these markers could by is by studying the Topo maps. If there is a "BM" marked, there is a very good chance that with a close look, you can find that brass marker.

Thanks again.

We stumbled across this when head from Alice Springs to Roxby Downs going the back way. It's a few hundred kms southeast of Alice.
In our 3 yrs on the road we went to the Northern, Southern, Eastern and western most points of Australia and the dead centre as well. We found plenty of cairns and trigg points as we travelled. Pitty I didn't think to photograph them all. Good idea for future trips.

Hi Josh

Thanks for that, and it brings back many memories and I can still remember the very first time we went there in 1994.

This post is also linked to my Blog, so now anyone that open the Blog will also have access to this post.

Thanks again.
