I have a GME TX 3200 which I am very happy with.

Made in Australia, at least when I bought mine they were, very reliable and simple to use.

I get good range out of small gutter mounted antennae

Yep - GME is very good. Electric Bug are right into it - not sure about price - get some other quotes.... also Johnston Electronics at Elizabeth.

The UNIDEN UH012 is very small but appears to have all normal facilities and 5watt output and scan. It was $269 at Agquip a few weeks ago.
Where you put the aerial depends on the type. On a bullbar it must be an elevated feed type to get the actual radiating part up high. Otherwise a magnetic mount on the roof works well but is more vulnerable.

Mount the antenna on the gutter.... Bullbar mounting is ok for cb (27meg) but uhf is height dependant...
If you ever see a motorola syntrx commercial uhf radio for sale... They are great because you can boost some of them up to 25watts output....
They are a bit of a dinosaur but they are unbreakable...

GME is dearer but the best of its type, clear crisp signals & good range. Check 4WD Monthly Accessoris Guide for comparrison guide. Aerial needs to be as high as you can get it for best reception but forget the gutter mount - they get ripped off by tree branches and carports.

Have the tx 4400, excellcent as it sends the audio straight out at you. Try Tranceiver services at Parafield out did the bug by substantial dollars 18 months ago. For that matter out did everyone i tried.

The GME TX4400 is the ducks guts. Try Prestige electronics- on the net in Perth, they are nearly always about the best price. Mine took a whole 24 hours to arrive by courier to Brisbane.

I have a TX 4400 and one significant advantage if the eyes aren't what they used to be is the size of the display. The TX3200 (the model below) will fit into a smaller space but also has a much smaller display.

Another vote for the TX3200 use mine all the time no probs, just a note
that a ground independant antenna is best if your mounting on bullbar,
but not sure exactly why, hope this helps.

Also cast my vote for the GME TX4400- it's the best!
Bullbar mount works for me.
However, a GOOD roof mount antenna would give you slightly better range- but you're only talking a few percent as the height difference is not much- (it's not like you can put it on a 40 foot pole!) and then you have a problem every tree you pass under, garages, car parks etc.
Go for the package deal that Prestiege in Perth sell- you won't be disappointed.

Wal30_au, I see no one has really helped you with the antenna question, to save typing it all out again, do a search on this forum, keywords "uhf antenna" or just UHF. hundreds of threads.
