Hi all,
Tis the season to be jolly and to celebrate I have just published some free downloads of the
EOTopo map series. A new 2.5M scale map is freely available for all to download and comes in OZF4, ECW, TIF and MMF file formats.
The OZF, ECW & TIF are zipped and contain the associated MAP files for use directly within OziExplorer or other mapping program.
The TIF willl will also open on most computers directly without any mapping programs and will allow you to print and view the file.
The MMF file is a MudMap file and is the first of the MudMap supported files.
Also on the download list is the newest 1M scale map. These are available to all existing
EOTopo 200K owners and come in OZF4 and ECW formats. So if you also ready have purchased
EOTopo 200K you will be able to download this new additional map.
Again many thanks to all the people that have purchased this newest map product. I would also like to thank the numerous people that have contributed updates to the product. We have already added about 2000 more roads updates into the next release and expected thousands more early next year.

The iPad/IOS platforms will not support file download in this fashion - if you want to use the files you will need to transfer them via iTunes to a compatible program on the device such as Mud Map or Memory-Map.

Mike,
Did your 1M map in the upper left hand panel say 2014.1 or 2014.2 - if it is .1 then try the download again and get the 2014.2 version installed last night - there was an error in the 2014.1 version.
David
PS: Can you let me know once downloaded if it works OK?

Well I made a mess of that lot. I published the 1M and 2.5M at version 2014.1 but there was a serious error with the data so it was just republished at 2014.2 so if you have already downloaded them
check in the top left hand panel to see if you have 2014.1 or 2014.2 - you should have 2014.2 as this is the latest version of the 1M & 2.5M maps.

Downloaded the
EOTopo 2.5M Australia 2014.2 no issues and when tried to download the
EOTopo 1M Australia 2014.2 says 'You must have purchased
EOTopo 200k to qualify'. I have purchased. Hopefully pick it up tomorrow at LPO when we fly to town for mail weather permitting at this stage.

The downloads will be enabled once the product has been dispatched from the warehouse - the system checks the status of the orders to determine to validity of the license.
So if you just ordered it will be available in about 4 hours when the dispatch emails are sent for the day.

Changed my e-mail address and still would let me download. Couldn't post because of two days limit. Wouldn't let me back to post amd wouldn't send e-mail despite pressing the Re-send button and telling me the e-mail had been sent. Had to re-register with altered name and same e-mail address and of course still cannot download.

Hello
What is your exact problem in detail...can you open this page?
Eotopo Info Page
Can you see free download link button at top?
What happens when you click on it? A list should appear with the various download options.

ARGH
The 2.5m scale shows no current and abandoned railway lines.
There are some cardinal rules of topographic maps that should always be adheared to. Not showing the current and abandoned railway lines is like trying to rewrite history and the basic rules of cartography.
Leaving out such vital topographic information is cardinal sin.

Yes that was an oversight and you will find the 200K - 2014 has the same oversight. I have corrected this now and you will be able to get this sorted in the next 200K update which is expected to be released in Feb/March next year. There will be more online and 1M & 2.5M updates prior to the next 200K release so keep your eyes on these and if you see anything else simply let us know and it will be taken care of for the next release.
If you have a look at the
EOTopo Online system you will see that these are now showing plus I corrected a label issue.
The map set is a work in progress and we are adding heaps of updates and changes all the time - we are working on a multiple update model so that the data is evolving all the time and is able to be provided as up to date as possible.

The 2.5 does have the current Operation status railways shown - it is however just a
grey line at this scale - I will tweak this a little for the next release to make it bigger.

Someone (and Anybodyelse)..Keep in mind 1:2.5m is a very small scale map - some detail is just impossible to show (or at least there is no point in showing). I think abandoned railway lines may fall into this category.
I am also not sure the map rates as a topographical map either - it has some shaded relief but I don't think it serves much purpose in this respect - more a map that provides a wide view from which you can determine areas of interest for closer, more detailed inspection/planning (i.e. then look at a larger scale map of specific areas). Different scale maps have different uses. You can't apply the same "cardinal rules" (real or made up) to maps of all scales (except maybe north arrow and scale bar - though maybe not that important on a digital map :)

Greg the Geoscience 1:5m shows all the railways. Railways are a *MAJOR* topographical feauture current and abandoned and should never be left out. Maps need to be cartgraphically accurate with major features regardless of scale. Leaving our railways is a cardinal sin of cartography - no excuses.

Hi
No worries - wasn't aware of the cardinal rules (self taught map maker). More information the better (without cluttering a map to the point it is unreadable) but still don't see the point of showing abandoned railways on such a small scale (1:2.5m ->1:5 mill!!) - fair enough of current "Major" features.
Also how long does a railway line have to be "abandoned" before you can leave them off and not have the map police come down on you ? :) I notice several abandoned railways south of
Perth are not shown on the GA 1:1mill scale map..must be too old.
Cheers

Greb abandoned railways or tramways are *NEVER LEFT* off topographic maps as they are major topographical features and important historically and often
well used by hikers, riders and vehicles.
For example there is a small bit of abandoned railway line east of
Guyra circa 1915. Was up there the other day and the
bridge bearers and where the line was laid is still very much there.

Oh
well looks like they do leave some off for one reason or another - the one I was referring to goes from
Busselton to August in WA - shut down and ripped up in ~1950. It's not shown (as an abandoned rail line) on 25K (one small section is), 50K, 100K, 250K etc etc topos I have. A universal ignorance of one of the cardinal rules by the looks. Can see why it should be on the 25K -> 250K - they are turning most sections into a walk trail so it should reappear one day:)

The 2.5m scale map also misses out at least one major road. Thunderbolts Way from
Walcha to
Gloucester in NSW. Not even a suggestion that there is a road there. In fact it is a major link from the
New England to
Newcastle.
There are also numerous red
spider lines which seem to have no meaning all over the place. They do not correspond to any roads that I know.

...Probably several major roads missing - its a work in progress.
The "numerous red
spider lines" are shown in the map legend as representing minor roads/unsealed tracks. I haven't checked all of them :) but ones in my area do correspond to existing roads (keep in mind many are not shown - just the major minor roads/tracks - if that makes sense). Maybe you could provide a more specific example where you are sure the tracks shown don't actually exist.
...Though not sure it matters - you wouldn't use a map of this scale to navigate minor tracks/roads anyway. I think the depiction of these on this scale map is simply to indicate there are tracks in that particular area - best get a larger scale map if going to a specific area.
Cheers

Phil,
Not all roads are rendered on the 2.5M map but I will have a look in that area when I next fire up the GIS workstation - can you provide me a screen capture of the area of interest/where the road should be. This will make it easier for us to identify the correct area. Simply email this to updates@
eotopo.com and I will be sure to get this action-ed/investigated.

If I have this larger scale map, what use would the 1m or 2.5m be to me ?
What use would I put them to ?

Hello Willie
You can never have enough maps ...and they are free so nothing to lose. Though I get your point. The full 200k (or 250K) mosaic is possibly all you need - given we are talking digital maps so you can zoom in and out changing "scale".
Good thing about smaller scale digital (raster) maps I suppose is that you can see the labels of major towns etc even when zoomed way out. So, when on the PC (etc) you can whiz around and have a look knowing where you are without having to zoom in, maybe mark a few waypoints, then load your larger scale 200K map and then see more detail. I do that all the time going from 250K -> 50K/25K .
Cheers

I am doing
well and planning a big trip to WA with my now "mostly" retired wife.
I use Ozi for Android on my phone and tablet, Ozi CE on my in-car screen and full Ozi on the laptop that I take away, and on my desktop.
They all have different ways of doing things, so this means I am constantly bamboozled !
I am mad keen on gold detecting these days and go to WA or Qld goldfields every year.

Good work David,
I purchased my set via Memory Map.
A couple of questions if I may:
1) How do we get the newest 1M scale maps as I have tried this site and it won't let me.
2) Was the Memory Map release 2014.1 or 2014.2?
Thanks,

Pete,
The 1M will be provided in Memory-Map as soon as it is added to the set. I do not control this part of the process and I think the guys are on holidays. It is a hard time of the year to be updating all this stuff. However it will be done ASAP. I may also once I get a converted file publish a link to download this part.
The currently released maps are 2014 - the .1 & .2 are incremental updates and have only just been done in the last few days.

I am in a similar position. It seems that MM support for Australia and NZ is a one man band and he is currently on his yacht somewhere.
I only took the 2 device license as I don't want to be bothered transferring files from my computer so I have been wondering how all this will work. There seems to be an assumption in mist of the instructions that downloads will be to a PC. Or am I reading it wrong?
